What advice do you have for medical students considering a career in psychiatry?
- Do more than one psychiatry rotation.
- Do an outpatient psychiatry rotation.
- Get involved in a research/ publishing/presentation project.
- Seek faculty and resident advisors in the field.
- Read and know the fundamentals: DSM diagnostic criteria, APA Practice Guidelines (executive summaries of major disorders), commonly prescribed Meds (dozing, common and serious side effects), and commonly used therapies (Supportive, CBT, psychodynamic, DBT, and group psychotherapy).
